Colin Joyce is joining Arte Umbria for a week long residential ‘Plein Air’ workshop on 13 June 2018. The fully inclusive price is £1085. Delighted to have him on board. Well known to some of our other regular tutors and he is a great addition to our team.
Colin always had an interest in art since early school years and studied art to A-level then, later, part-time college. Having pursued a career in Financial Services for 38 years, painting in his spare time, he took early retirement in 2013 to concentrate on art full time. Mainly self-taught, Colin has been fortunate to have studied with renowned oil painter Ken Howard RA OBE, also internationally known watercolourists Joseph Zbukvic and Alvaro Castagnet.
Colin conducts workshops and demonstrations for art groups throughout the UK, writes articles for Leisure Painter magazine and is a watercolour instructor on cruise ships. He works from his own studio in Fife, Scotland.
Here’s what Colin has to say.
“I love to travel and record those memories in sketches and paintings. What grabs my attention is light, the way it changes the landscape day by day, hour by hour. I paint what inspires me, what stops me in my tracks.
I’m driven to create a painting on location (En Plein Air) which offers a spontaneous vitality, sometimes difficult to recreate later in the studio.
I want to help my students develop their own visual interpretation of the landscape around them, to show that they’ve noticed something they may not have otherwise. This is developing the art of seeing, using your emotional response to the subject rather than just painting what’s there.
Students should work in the medium of their choice, whatever they are comfortable with. I normally use either oils or watercolour when outdoors, alongside a sketchbook.”
